\n\nWe would like to invite you to take part in our research study. Before you decide it is important that you understand why we are doing the research and what we are asking of you. Please read this information carefully. If you have questions, or if you would like more information, please ask us.
\n\nWho is carrying out the research?
\n\nThis research project is being undertaken as part of a UKRI Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Chichester and Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity. The research is being conducted by George Horne, under the supervision of Dr Benjamin Sharpe (Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Psychology, University of Chichester) and the Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity service team.
\n\nWhy is the research being done?
\n\nThe purpose of this project is to understand how early intervention services impact children with motor learning impairments and their families. Currently, there is limited evidence about the effectiveness of these services on child development, family wellbeing, and the economic circumstances of families. This research will help Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity demonstrate the value of their services, secure sustainable funding, and improve support for families across the South East and beyond.
\n\nWhy are you invited?
\n\nYou are invited to participate in this research project because your child is suspected of having or has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy (or another gross motor impairment) and is either currently accessing services at Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity, on the waiting list for these services, or utilising services elsewhere. Your experiences over the next 12 months will help us understand how early intervention services make a difference to families like yours.
\n\nWhat does participation involve?
\n\nYour participation will involve completing questionnaires at three time points over 12 months: at the start of the study (baseline), after 6 months, and after 12 months. Each assessment session will take approximately 30–40 minutes and can be completed online at a time convenient for you.
\n\nThe questionnaires will ask about:
\n\n• Your child's motor development and daily activities
\n• Your family's wellbeing and quality of life
\n• Healthcare appointments and services you access
\n• Employment and any financial impacts of caring for your child
\n\nWe may also get in contact with you if a prior survey response needs additional clarity.
\n\nWhat happens if you change your mind and want to withdraw?
\n\nYour participation in this research project is entirely voluntary. If you do agree to participate you can withdraw from the research project without comment or penalty at any time. If you withdraw after data collection is complete, on request any information already obtained that can be linked to you will be destroyed. If you wish to exercise your right to withdraw consent or request erasure of personal information after this period it may not be possible to erase your data, as all data will be anonymised prior to analysis and it will not be possible to identify individual participants. Your decision to participate or not participate will in no way impact upon your current or future relationship with Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity or the services you receive.
\n\nWhat are the possible benefits for me if I take part?
\n\nThe outcomes of the research will benefit families of children with cerebral palsy by helping Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity improve their services, secure funding to expand support provision for early intervention within the charity sector, and contribute to evidence-based practice in early intervention services nationally. If you currently receive support from DVLCC, participation will help us maintain these services for you and hopefully more families. If you are not currently receiving support from DVLCC, we will reimburse you with a £20 amazon gift card and work with other early intervention charities to increase national support and service availability. If you have been recruited through Designability's network, they are reimbursing participants separately - please get in touch with them after completion of both parts.\n\n
\n\nWhat are the possible risks for me if I take part?
\n\nThere are minimal risks associated with your participation in this research project. The questionnaires ask about topics that families typically discuss during therapy sessions, such as your child's development, family coping, and support needs. However, reflecting on your child's disability, family wellbeing, and economic circumstances may be emotionally challenging at times. To minimise and manage any distress:
\n\n• All questions are optional and you can skip any you prefer not to answer
\n• You can pause or reschedule any assessment session without penalty
\n• Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity's parent support worker will be available during assessments and by phone if you need support
\n• We will provide information about support services including DVLCC parent support, Scope's family support service, local NHS mental health services, and financial advice services
\n• If significant distress occurs, the assessment will pause immediately and you will be offered appropriate support
\n\nThe research team have received training in recognising distress and providing appropriate support.
\n\nWhat about privacy and confidentiality?
\n\nAll comments and responses are coded, meaning it will be possible to re-identify you. You will be asked to generate a participant identification code (e.g. your initials, year of birth, and a two-digit number of your choosing) which will be used to link your data across the three assessment sessions. This code will be stored separately from personal information and will only be accessible to the research team. The code and identifying information will be destroyed five years after the research is complete.
\n\nAny personal information that could identify you will be removed or changed before files are shared with other researchers or results are made public. This includes names, contact details, postcodes, specific dates, and identifying details about family circumstances or location.
\n\nAll data will be stored securely in line with the University of Chichester’s Privacy Standard. Personal data will be retained only as long as necessary and securely destroyed when no longer required. An exemption applies to the right to erasure where complying would seriously impair the research, but safeguards will be in place. Identifiable data will only be disclosed where legally required. Research outputs will present averaged data only, and no individual responses will be identifiable.
\n\nThe research project is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity. UKRI and the charity will not have access to identifiable data. Anonymised data with any potentially identifying demographic indicators will be removed when sharing data with charities. Only anonymised summary findings will be shared publicly.
